Maine paycheck calculator

Maine works its withholding from Form W-4ME, which a new employee hands in alongside the federal W-4 and which no longer borrows its allowance count from the federal form. Each allowance takes a fixed sum off the annualised wage, a Maine standard deduction comes off as well, and the remainder goes through a single or a married schedule. That standard deduction is whole at ordinary wages and shrinks to nothing over a range of higher ones.

How Maine withholding is worked out

The status box on the W-4ME decides the schedule. Married uses the married rates; Single or Head of Household and Married but withholding at higher single rate both use the single ones, so an employee who ticked the higher single rate should pick Single on this page. The standard deduction built into withholding is the department's own figure for its tables and differs slightly from the basic standard deduction on the annual return. Maine paid family and medical leave sits beside the income tax: the employer may pass part of the premium on to the employee, up to a share of wages the state sets, or pay all of it, which keeps the deduction a matter of each employer's choice and outside this calculation.

These are withholding figures: what an employer takes out of one paycheck, which is not the same calculation as the one on an annual return.

Wages are annualised before the schedule is read, so the figures below are annual.

Withheld beside the income tax

ME Paid Family and Medical Leave — up to 0.5%, if your employer withholds it
Maine paid family and medical leave. The employer chooses how much of the premium to pass on, up to half of one per cent of wages, and may pay all of it instead. The state sets the ceiling and the employer decides how much of it to take, so this calculator leaves the line out. The generator carries it once you say what your employer withholds.
