Ohio paycheck calculator

Ohio reads a short graduated schedule that every filing status shares, after taking a fixed sum off the income for each exemption claimed on the state's certificate. The schedule it reads changed part way through the year, so which paycheck you are asking about matters here in a way it does not in most states.

Pay type

Take-home pay

How Ohio withholding is worked out

The state published a new withholding schedule with effect from the first of August, and both appear below because both were right for part of the year. A paycheck dated in the spring is worked out on the earlier one and a paycheck dated in the autumn on the later one; the answer above uses whichever is in effect now. The exemption did not move between the two, so the whole of the difference sits in the schedule itself. Anyone reconciling a stub from earlier in the year against this page should check its date before deciding the numbers disagree.

These are withholding figures: what an employer takes out of one paycheck, which is not the same calculation as the one on an annual return.

In effect from January 1, 2026

Ohio reads one schedule whatever the filing status. Wages are annualised first, so the figures below are annual.

Every filing status
Annual wages Tax on the lower figure Rate on the rest
$0.00 to $26,050.00$0.001.775%
$26,050.00 to $100,000.00$462.392.99%
$100,000.00 and up$2,673.493.64%
Exemption per allowance
$650.00

Taken off the income before the schedule.

State tax only. Ohio municipalities and school districts charge income taxes of their own, withheld by the employer on top of this.

Payroll periods ending before 1 August 2026 use the tables effective 1 October 2025. Annual thresholds are the weekly table times 52, the same convention as the current record. Ohio reaches the federal base through two sections of its code. ORC 5747.06(A) makes the employer withhold on "the amount of such compensation included in the employee's adjusted gross income", and ORC 5747.01(A) defines that term as "federal adjusted gross income, as defined and used in the Internal Revenue Code, adjusted as provided in this section". None of the modifications that section lists names a cafeteria plan, a 401(k) or deferred compensation, so a pre-tax deferral or premium stays out of the Ohio base as it stays out of the federal one.
