Rhode Island paycheck calculator

Rhode Island reads one set of tables for every filing status: its booklet heads them for all filing status types, and Form RI W-4 has no box for a status at all. What the RI W-4 does carry is the number of allowances, each worth a fixed exemption taken off the wage before the rates are read. Above a high annual wage that exemption is worth nothing.

How Rhode Island withholding is worked out

The federal W-4 can no longer stand in for the RI W-4: since 2020 an employer has needed the state form as well, and it carries the allowances and any extra amount the employee wants withheld. The exemption applied here for each allowance disappears above that annual wage, as the form itself warns, so past it the allowance count leaves the Rhode Island figure where it is. Beside the income tax, Rhode Island takes temporary disability insurance from the employee, who pays it in full. That line is worked out here up to its yearly wage limit, and it also funds temporary caregiver insurance.

These are withholding figures: what an employer takes out of one paycheck, which is not the same calculation as the one on an annual return.

Rhode Island reads one schedule whatever the filing status. Wages are annualised first, so the figures below are annual.

Every filing status
Annual wages Tax on the lower figure Rate on the rest
$0.00 to $82,050.00$0.003.75%
$82,050.00 to $186,450.00$3,076.884.75%
$186,450.00 and up$8,035.885.99%
Exemption per allowance
$1,000.00

Taken off the income before the schedule. Above $290,800.00 of annual wages, the allowances count for nothing.

Withheld beside the income tax

RI Temporary Disability Insurance — 1.1%
Rhode Island temporary disability insurance, which also funds temporary caregiver insurance. Employees pay for it in full through payroll deduction and the employer contributes nothing. Withheld until wages for the year reach $100,000.00.
