Pay stub requirements in New Jersey

New Jersey does not legislate a list of pay stub fields the way its neighbours do. What the Wage Payment Law requires is a statement of deductions with every payment, showing gross and net wages and every deduction itemised individually, and the employer chooses whether that arrives on paper or on a screen. Wages are due at least twice a calendar month on paydays fixed in advance. The 2026 minimum wage runs on four separate tracks rather than one: $15.92 for most employees, $15.23 at seasonal and small employers, $14.20 for farm work paid hourly or by the piece, and $18.92 for direct care staff at long-term care facilities.

What New Jersey law requires

  • A statement of deductions every time you are paid

The Division of Wage and Hour Compliance answers it plainly: each time you are paid you must receive a statement of deductions listing the gross and net wages and all individually itemised deductions, such as taxes. The statement may be provided electronically or in hard copy, and the choice belongs to the employer rather than the employee.

  • Payday at least twice a month, set in advance

Most employers must pay wages at least twice during each calendar month, on regular paydays designated in advance by the employer. Certain executive, supervisory or other special classes of workers may be paid once a month, but only where there is a regularly established schedule to be paid on.

  • Four minimum wage tracks in 2026, not one

From January 1, 2026 the rate is $15.92 for most employees. Employees of seasonal and small employers are on a slower schedule that runs to 2028 and stand at $15.23. Farm work paid by the hour or by the piece is on its own timetable to 2030 and stands at $14.20. Direct care staff at long-term care facilities are entitled to $18.92. The tipped cash wage is $6.05, with the maximum tip credit unchanged at $9.87.

  • Payroll debit cards carry extra duties

An employer paying wages onto a payroll debit card must explain to the employee how the card can be used at least once per pay period to withdraw wages in full, without any fee and without difficulty. The obligation to furnish a statement of deductions for each pay period does not go away because the money arrived on a card.

  • Deductions the employer is not allowed to take

New Jersey bars deductions for damage to company equipment, for failure to return company property, for uniforms, and for pre-employment drug or other testing, with a narrow carve-out for the State Police registration costs of security guard applicants. An employer also may not take a payroll deduction for a licence or certification that is required in order to do the job.
