Utah paycheck calculator

Utah takes the filing status from the federal W-4 and has no certificate or allowance count of its own. Its formula charges one rate on the taxable wage and then gives part of it back as a base allowance, which wears down by a fixed share of every dollar earned past a threshold until none of it is left. A married employee starts from a larger allowance that also lasts further up the pay scale.

How Utah withholding is worked out

For a single employee the base allowance is used up well before the top of the pay scale, and from there the state line is simply the rate times the taxable pay. Between the threshold and that point each extra dollar costs more than the rate alone, because it also wears the allowance down. A head of household has no Utah schedule and is withheld on the single one. When Utah changes its schedules partway through a year, it picks the set by the day a pay period begins, while this page works a paycheck out by the day it is paid, so for a period that starts before the change and is paid after it the two can differ. Each set is printed below with the day it starts. The wages read are those subject to federal withholding, so pre-tax 401(k) and cafeteria plan deductions are already out of them.

These are withholding figures: what an employer takes out of one paycheck, which is not the same calculation as the one on an annual return.

In effect from January 1, 2026

Utah charges the same rates whatever the filing status, but the status still changes the amounts given below the table. Wages are annualised first, so the figures below are annual.

Every filing status
Annual wages Tax on the lower figure Rate on the rest
$0.00 and up$0.004.5%
Credit by filing status

Single: $450.00, less 1.3% of annual wages over $9,107.00

Married filing jointly: $900.00, less 1.3% of annual wages over $18,213.00

Head of household: $450.00, less 1.3% of annual wages over $9,107.00

Taken off the tax, not off the income. It wears down by that share of the wages until none of it is left.

Pay periods beginning before 1 June 2026 use Publication 14 Rev. 4/25: 4.5% less a base allowance that tapers by 1.3% of wages over the threshold. Utah publishes only Single and Married schedules, so head of household is withheld on the single column.

Publication 14 Rev. 4/26, cited as the page the state publishes it on, which the monthly source check can read; the PDF the page offers, files.tax.utah.gov/tax/forms/pubs/pub-14.pdf, refuses automated requests and was read from the Internet Archive's copy of 16 July 2026 (web.archive.org/web/20260716180416/https://files.tax.utah.gov/tax/forms/pubs/pub-14.pdf). Its cover says "The income tax withholding tables in this revision are effective for pay periods beginning on or after June 1, 2026", so a period that began before that date stays on the earlier entry even when it is paid after it. SB 60 cut the rate to 4.45%. Utah publishes only Single and Married schedules, so head of household is withheld on the single column.
